Life advice - long?

I'm at a crossroads right now. I'm looking for advice and maybe another perspective on things.

Do you ever wonder if you are doing yourself a disservice by not going into a career that could really make a difference rather than one that you want to do? I think I have the intelligence and ability to do anything I want, but there are some things I just don't think I am suited to, andf I feel annoyed with myself for not being able to do them.

I'm hung up on the notion that if you do not do something with a lot of respect, you aren't as important. A lot of this is just rambling, but if anyone wants to comment, that is fine.Life advice - long?
You sound like you are in your early 20's. I'm 43. I went to college and all that stuff. From that experience, and over time, I've learned how to think differently and look at life from many perspectives.

I've learned two very simple truths.

1) The only person I have to please, is me. What pleases me is helping people when I can, and doing what's right. I sleep good at night when I do this.

2) Attitude is everything. The way you perceive something is the way it is until your attitude changes. If your attitude is bad, then your life will be too. A positive attitude gives positive results.

How does that apply to you? I suggest that you do what will make you happy in life. Don't pick a job because of a sense of obligation. There isn't any enjoyment in a life like that. The most miserable people in the world are the ones that are living a life of obligation. It is a cage that they freely put themselves into because they are told they have to.

Make yourself happy and have a good life.Life advice - long?
If you went into a field that was doing a service to people and you didn't really want to go into it (even though you know you can do the work) then are you really doing a service to the people? If you are doing something that you are really into, no matter how insignificant it seems, you would be doing more of a service to people.

It's like going into medicine or law because your parents said they disown you if you didn't go into one of those fields. If you don't want to do it then why do it.

I think that you can get respect for any kind of job that you do as long as you enjoy it. You have respect yourself and your decisions before you can expect anyone else to respect you and your job. Besides, why should a job be the deciding point in if people you respect your or not.
Yes, that is perplexing isn't it. I just read about my profession in the US News and World Reports of the top 25 professions. They rated the jobs according to prestige, salary, difficulty and amount of education needed. I was surprised that my job (audiologist) had a higher salary than architects but a lower prestige. Interesting, huh? And nursing has a lower prestige than audiology. Do we do what we like, what is respected or what gives us the largest salary? Only you can decide. I think that we should do the thing that we are able to do competently that gives us the most satisfaction. If it happens to be teaching and the world doesn't respect it then too bad. We wake up happy every day to do what we enjoy. If you go by what is the most prestigous but you aren't happy then what good is that?
I believe I'm in a career that really makes a difference, and yes, I've looked back several times thinking, ';I could be rich if I only...';

But, consider this, you spend more of your ';awake'; hours in your job... shouldn't it be something you enjoy doing?? I read a book once called ';Do What You Love and The Money Will Come';. If you believe your ';job'; does not make a difference in other's lives, then do volunteer work on your off hours.
well if your going into a career just because someone thinks it will help someone else but you hate it you are doing a disservice to yourself. you have to like what you are doing or it will help no one.
hmmmmm
Well, just about any career has its own positives. A job is not work when you enjoy what you are doing. Taking pride in your own style and being confident , will remove any doubt. Besides that, whatever you do, will open many doors for investigation. You can do it! Good Luck
